Dear fellow nurses,

This year, as we celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee SG50, we also celebrate 130 years of nursing in Singapore. Nursing is the backbone of the healthcare system; it has come a long way in establishing itself as a highly regarded profession in Singapore.

12 May is symbolic as the world celebrates International Nurses day to commemorate Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The nursing history of Singapore began on 1 August 1885 when a group of 11 nuns from a French Convent answered the call to care for the sick in the General Hospital at Sepoy Lines. Today, 130 years on, nurses make up the majority of our healthcare professionals delivering care at the frontline – with more than one out of every two healthcare professionals in Singapore being a nurse.

Over the last decade, Singapore nursing has been pushing the boundaries of nursing practice. The nursing profession is not just about choosing a right job; it is about a strong foundation of professional knowledge and skills, compassion, commitment and trust. Many patients will shares their concerns, anxieties, secrets and even look upon nurses for advice and strengths.

In order to meet these changing demands, nurses have to live up to this high expectation and professional standards, be a patient advocate and help them navigate the healthcare system with integrity and humility.

In acknowledgment of the nurses’ contributions, many awards are presented annually including; 100 Nurses Merit Awards was presented last Friday, 24 July and The President’s Award for nurses which will be presented by the President of Singapore, on 31 July at the Istana. This is the highest national award given, in recognition of outstanding performance, and significant contributions nurses make to the profession and to the community.

The healthcare sector is a growing and promising sector. As Nurses, we play a very important role in healthcare, supporting the work that is required to keep our families, friends and the nation healthy. This has never been more true than today, as nurses take on expanded roles to meet Singapore’s needs.

Whether you are a nurse in a hospital, an Intermediate and long term care (ILTC) service or a clinic, your role has evolved together with the ever-changing health care system and, you now play an even bigger part in ensuring the continuity of care for the community. Every day we play a greater role towards improving patient experiences and the nation’s health and prepare us for the challenges ahead as we brace ourselves for the ‘Silver Tsunami’.

Keeping true to our mission to raise the profile of nursing, the Singapore Nurses Association (SNA) continues to play an active role within the International Council of Nurses (ICN) – a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations representing the millions of nurses worldwide. The ICN hosts a bi-annual Conference which attracts thousands of nurses and leading experts from all over the world.

This year, the conference was held in Seoul, Korea, and will be held in Barcelona, Spain in 2017. SNA is very pleased to announce that we have been selected to host the ICN Conference 2019 in Singapore. We will need all your support and participation in this very prestigious and important international conference.

As we continue to push on with professional development, SNA has also been looking at providing more for members. This year we have made great progress by working with new Lifestyle Partners to bring even more value to the SNA membership. Very soon, all SNA members can look forward to a new Kopitiam card which will entitle the holder to 20% discount at all Kopitiams located in hospitals, and 10% discount at any other Kopitiam outlet.

We have also worked together with many other partners to provide discounts and benefits to members by working with partners such as Starhub, Singtel, Grand Hyatt Singapore, Grand Copthorne Hotel, Bengawan Solo, Savio Staff travel and many more.

We will also be holding a Lucky Draw at the end of August 2015 for all members (members on GIRO will get double the chance of winning) with a Grand Prize of a packaged staycation at The Grand Copthorne, Executive Suite worth $1780.

Once again I would like to wish all of you a very happy Nurses Day and urge you to continue your good work. We look forward with great anticipation to your future contributions in the nursing profession.

Yours Sincerely,
President and the Executive Council
